Principal Research Shop Foreman

                                                       

This position has the responsibility to oversee the operations and construction at the NOvA Experiment in Ash River Mn. We will be receiving over 3.5 million gallons of scintillator oil (mineral oil with pseudocumene), 12,000 modules (extruded PVC) and enough adhesive to glue everything together to build a detector that will have a total mass of 15 kiloton and will be 15.7 meters wide,15.7 meters tall and 78 meters long.

This will be a 10 hour/4 day work week. For the initial 6 months this will be a day shift position but some workers will be moved to the afternoon shift after their training period. This would include a shift differential pay increase of 60 cents per hour. Most of these positions will last 2 to 3 years.

JOB DUTIES
The Principal Research Shop Foreman will supervise a work crew of Assistant Construction Technicians and Construction Technicians. Positions in this class have the responsibility of supervising Construction Technicians during the assembly of the NOvA Detector in:
-- shipping and receiving of semi-trucks of scintillator oil and modules
-- filling the modules with scintillator oil
-- the use and operation of adhesive machine, laboratory and shop equipment
-- installation of plumbing, electronics, cabling
-- adhesive and module placement
-- installation of required plumbing, electronics and cabling
-- routine laboratory record keeping practices, and laboratory safety practices

Confer with project personnel, faculty research personnel, and others regarding construction specifications, scheduling, test standards, and other factors relative to the experimental apparatus.

Works with lab management to help set up production schedules and determines the necessity of requesting overtime, the priority of various projects, and the number or class of personnel necessary to do the job. Assigns work according to the particular talents and skills demonstrated by an individual.

Drills, planes, grinds, punches, trims, shapes, forms, cuts, and otherwise creates parts to be fabricated in complex experimental research equipment. Assemble, wire, connect, and fasten components into a coordinated working unit.

Inspects and approves finished projects. Monitor testing and quality control procedures which may be necessary to insure the proper functioning of the NOvA detector. Suggest changes as necessary to correct errors and defects.

Requisitions shop supplies, equipment, and materials. Maintains and submits such records as estimated completion time and work progress.

Sets up and maintains stock control and tool control systems. Responsible for periodic inventories of shop supplies, tools, and materials.

Orients, trains, and advises new personnel in matters of the lab objectives and methods, work standards, safety rules, work attendance rules, and other areas affecting the employee's personal achievement in the lab. Consult with lab management regarding personnel problems that may arise and takes appropriate steps to correct the situation.

Request and plan additional space utilization, and otherwise generally improving the effectiveness of the lab operation.
The Principal Research Shop Foreman will assist with the construction if an Assistant Construction Technician or Construction Technician is sick or on vacation. Many of the tasks require a full crew to safely complete the job.

Required Qualifications:
Two years of related vocational/technical training and eight years of relevant experience including lead worker responsibility or any equivalent combination of training and work experience totaling ten years minimum.

Preferred Qualifications:
Good communication skills, both written and oral, and the operation of computers to input data.
