Construction Technician

                                                       

This position has many responsibilities in construction of a neutrino detector at the Ash River NOvA Laboratory in Ash River, MN. We will be receiving over 3.5 million gallons of scintillator oil (mineral oil with pseudocumene), 12,000 modules (extruded PVC) and enough adhesive to glue everything together to build a detector that will have a total mass of 15 kiloton and will be 15.7 meters wide,15.7 meters tall and 78 meters long.

This will be a 10 hour/4 day work week. For the initial 6 months this will be a day shift position but some workers will be moved to the afternoon shift after their training period. This would include a shift differential pay increase of 60 cents per hour. Most of these positions will last 2 to 3 years.

Positions in this class have the responsibility of performing various laboratory tests following established specialized procedures and techniques. Ability to follow instructions in the use and operation of adhesive machine, laboratory and shop equipment, installation of plumbing, electronics, cabling, routine laboratory record keeping practices, and laboratory safety practices.

There are pre-written rules and procedures for installation from Fermilab. Installation training will be provided. Crane training (including the use of crane hand signals) will be provided. This training will be part of the job safety training course.
Prefer employees who have experience in construction or are handy with their hands.

This position requires a trained First Responder or EMT training due to the remoteness of the site. Emergency response takes 20 minutes to arrive at the Ash River site (minimum).

JOB DUTIES

Conducts specialized laboratory procedures in all phases of the detector construction. Leak checking of all modules with special testing equipment. Operation of glue machine to dispense adhesive on modules. Assemble modules from duplication of a sample part or model. Putting 1000 pound modules in place. Install replacement parts on the detector.

The ability to give accurate crane signals to the crane operator to ensure exact placement of modules on the assembly table. Shipping and receiving duties will require the use of powered and manual pallet jacks and cable tuggers. Rigging supplies off of trucks with the assistance of a crane operator will also be required.

Participates in preparing and laying out supplies, equipment and apparatus. Provides technical assistance to professional staff personnel, graduate students and others in executing complex laboratory studies.

Operates or uses a variety of laboratory equipment including adhesive machine and laboratory and shop equipment used in the collection, processing, classification, description, measurement and analysis of modules, oil, and data. Some positions in the class may require the operation of computer terminals to input data. Responsible for installation of plumbing, electronics and cabling.

Routine laboratory record keeping using bar code readers to input information into a database.

Attention to detail and safety will be very important.
Laboratory safety practices must be followed. There is specific training for procedures. Very specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) policies must be followed. Fall protection training, must follow policy. Mandatory CPR and first aid in-house training participation required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation, completion of a vocational training course or of a formal apprenticeship in construction, and some broad experience in general construction work should provide the necessary background for this work. Equivalent combination of four years related academic or work experience.

Preferred
We would like the employee to have a First Responder Certificate for this position. The University will pay for training to maintain the certificate during employment.
