NuMi Receives Engineering Award

Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMi) received the 2006 Society of Civil Engineering Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award of Merit.

The NuMi Beamline is a facility at Fermilab which uses protons from the Main Injector accelerator to produce an intense beam of neutrinos which are utilized by the MINOS Experiment at the Soudan Mine in Northern Minnesota. The NuMi project was selected from a group of 20 entries, which also included bridges, dams and buildings. The 2006 winner and merit finalists are outstanding examples of how civil engineering can contribute to a community's economic success, improve residents' quality of life and facilitate scientific advancement. Previous winners include the relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and the World Trade Center Towers.
