MINOS Grand Opening

The MINOS (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search) Laboratory will officially begin operation this week, a half mile underground in the Soudan Underground Mine.

The recently completed laboratory houses the first half of the 6000-ton MINOS Far Detector, designed to intercept a beam of neutrinos generated at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in order to study their nature and properties. The University of Minnesota will play a key role in the MINOS project, a collaboration between 30 elementary particle physics groups in five countries.

The opening ceremony will feature a dedication of the laboratory by Michael Witherell, director of Fermilab and Mark Yudof, president of the University of Minnesota.
