Unexpected surface-induced tilt behavior

Null-transmission-ellipsometry was used to obtain temperature variation of surface-induced tilt profile above the SmA-SmC╬▒* transition of one antiferroelectric liquid crystal compound, MHPBC. Because of the reduced
fluctuations due to surface tension, the data can be fitted to an extended mean-field model,indicating that the transition is in the vicinity of a mean-field tricritical point. This is in contrast to the bulk 3D XYbehavior reported previously.
