Sam Penders won a 2017 Edmund Franklin Scholarship. He is originally from Apple Valley, Minnesota. He plans to use the scholarship to help cover the cost of tuition. He is interested in high energy physics, and plans to pursue a Ph.D in theoretical particle physics.

He previously contributed to analysis efforts for the NOvA neutrino oscillation experiment under Dr. Greg Pawloski, and will work under post-doc Dr. Dan Ambrose this summer to build the electron tracker for the Mu2e (muon to electron conversion) experiment. This experiment seeks to detect direct muon to electron conversion, a phenomenon not allowed by the Standard Model.
