Final Exam Rules
modified 3-May-2018 at 8:35AM by Oriol T. Valls

The final exam will have some rules that differ from those used in the quizzes. The ones that have been determined now are below, additional ones may be added later.

1- The exam will consist of five problems, similar to those you have seen in the quizzes, plus 15 brief multiple choice (mostly conceptual) quick questions.

2- A simple non programmable calculator to perform multiplications, divisions and trigonometry will be allowed. However, students may simply obtain one or two digit estimates by hand without penalty. (e.g speed of light 300,000 km/s etc, even pi=3
or epsilon_0=10^(-11) are OK).

3- Since the number of equations needed is obviously larger for the final, a file with equations is posted here. It may be updated before the exam: it is posted for your information, it will be given with the final questions so you do not bring it with you.

Old finals for Practice
modified 3-May-2018 at 8:30AM by Oriol T. Valls

A collection of old 1302 finals is posted here. These can be used by students to practice for the final.

IMPORTANT: some of the files have the questions and, by scrolling, the solutions. I highly recommend that you DO NOT look at the solutions before you have your own. You can then compare. Some of the files are problems only with the solutions in a separate file. Avoid looking at the solutions file before attempting the problem.

Also: a) Format of the exam (number of problems etc) varies from year to year. b) Do not worry about some problems requiring non-memorized equations or numerical values. These were always given in the past and will be given this year.

Makeup Final
posted 5-Apr-2018 at 3:01PM by Oriol T. Valls

Any student who is not able to attend the final exam for the course must submit a request for a makeup final to the Department. The deadline for doing this is April 25th and the Department does not accept late requests. The request must be done on the live link posted with the syllabus. The Department does NOT grant such requests automatically, but they verify that the student's absence for the regular final is for a reason that is officially recognized. Do not automatically assume that they will grant your request!

These are Department rules which cannot be waived by the Professor (OTV) so please understand and do not ask.

Regrading Policy
modified 18-Jan-2018 at 1:49PM by Oriol T. Valls

REGRADES

If you think that a Quiz problem was not graded correctly, begin by
looking at the posted solution. If after this you still think the
grade was incorrect, you may appeal subject to the following:

1- You may appeal any situation where you think you did the problem
(or a subsection of the problem that was labeled in the exam as
earning separate points) perfectly but were not given full credit.
For example, suppose you
answered correctly a question that counted 10 points and you were
given any number <10, this can be appealed.

2- You may NOT appeal partial credit that you deem insufficient. If
you were given no points or <10 points for a problem that you did not
solve correctly, you cannot say: "I think I should have gotten more
(or some) partial credit." Of course you do. But partial credit
is a judgement call and Baseball rules apply: not subject to appeal.

3- To appeal, within one week after you get your quiz back, give to your TA your
quiz with a small post-it sized note attached explaining why you think your
solution was right. If your explanation will not fit in such a small
note it means that your solution required a lot of additional
explanation to become understandable, which makes the appeal unacceptable.
Graders are not mind readers. If your solution was unreadable, a
rewritten version will not be accepted.

4- It is possible (although unusual) for the regrading of a question to
lead to a lower grade.
