Because of Thanksgiving the University is closed on Thursday and Friday. Thus there is no discussion section this week. The labs on Thursday and Friday are canceled as well. However, labs and lectures are taking place as usual on M through W. We will continue to work through chapter 30.

This week we have lectures on M and T. There is no lecture on W, because I will be out of town. We first work through Chapter 31 (sections 31.1, 31.3 and 31.4 only) and then start Chapter 30. Please ignore the second part of the homework problem 31.37, which asks for the change in B-field with temperature. We will not cover that part in the lecture.

Read the announcement under ‘links and downloads’ to prepare for the upcoming second quiz. I also uploaded a sample quiz for you to work on. The second quiz will cover chapters 24, 12, and 25. Since I will be out of the country, my email access might be quite restricted. Please contact your TA with any urgent questions.

I will be out of town from 10/11/09 to 10/18/09. Thus there will be no lectures two weeks from now. Because we will have our 2nd quiz the week I return I want to finish the remaining material next week, so that you have sufficient time to prepare. To do this we have lectures M, T, W, and F. The end-of-chapter solutions to the text problems are not always accurate. They are mainly meant to help you figure out the physics in case you are stuck. Case in point: the solution to problem 21.40 uses the right physics and the right equations, but nevertheless manages to state incorrect numerical values. For reference F1 = 1.0N and F2 = 0.33N.
