Application Process

The Physics Graduate Program only accepts applications for Fall admissions. The deadline for graduate applications has passed. We are no longer accepting applications for admission to the Fall 2019 class. Applications for Fall 2020 will be open in September 2019

What do I need to include on my application?

In addition to the general information (personal, educational, etc.) parts of the application, you must submit the following:

    1. On the Physics and Astronomy page:
      a. Statement of objectives
      b. Diversity Statement
      c. Description of Research/Teaching Experience
      d. Resume/CV

    2. Self-reported test scores (GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, etc)******

    3. Identification of three people who will write letters of recommendation.

    4. Transcripts from all colleges or universities attended and, if applicable, one transcript from the institution where you obtained your M.S. degree. Unofficial copies of your transcripts are acceptable when applying. The Graduate School requires official transcripts after admission to the program. ****What about the GRE?

Please submit your physics GRE scores if you have them. While the (physics) GRE is not required, it can strengthen your application. The deadline to submit GRE scores is December 15, 2018. If you have taken the GRE and do not yet have your scores is December 15, 2018. If you have taken the GRE and do not yet have your scores, you may still apply. Please indicate the date of your most recent exam on the Test Information page in the application. Official GRE scores must be sent directly to the UMN Graduate School from the testing center. Your application will automatically update your GRE score.

Note: The online application is not complete until the application fee has been paid. Your application will be reviewed upon receipt of all application materials. The School of Physics and Astronomy does not send acknowledgment upon receipt of application, nor does it send notification of missing documents. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure the arrival of all necessary documents to their correct recipients.

A decision regarding your application will be made late January.

Physics Open House for the 2018-2019 admissions cycle will be late February. We welcome all applicants, but can only reimburse those to whom we have offered admission and are coming from within the United States.
