PhysTEC Teacher in Residence Program
Note: The Teacher in Residence Program is filled for this year. New Applications will be accepted starting January 15, 2008.
Requirements:
- BA/BS with a major in physics (or physics minor or equivalent additional work in physics) and Physics licensure.
- Five years of successful teaching experience in physics or physical science.
- Principal/curriculum director’s support (letter of recommendation).
- Completed Application Form
- Evidence of prior work with, or understanding of, inquiry-based, constructivist-oriented teaching/learning strategies.
Job Description:
The TIR is a full-time position, beginning August, 2007, with salary commensurate with teacher's current salary. We anticipate that the teacher will be "seconded' from his or her district to the University.
The TIR will work with the University of Minnesota faculty in the School of Physics and Astronomy and its Physics Education Research group, and with College of Education C&I and PsTL faculty on some of the following tasks:
- Development of materials and approaches for recruitment of candidate physics teaching majors, utilizing experiences of the original PhysTEC Primary Institutions as appropriate.
- Providing ready experience and knowledge of science teaching in the classroom.
- Development of curriculum and its assessment for new courses on Physics teaching and learning.
- Enhancing and facilitating the liaison between faculty in the different departments to improve the coordination of the methods and subject matter courses.
- Teaching some new courses, generally as part of a team.
- Planning cohort activities.
- Leading the effort to organize placement of students in appropriate teaching activities.
- Developing induction and in-service support programs.
The TIR will be the principal mentor for the student cohorts, and pursue connections to school districts for early and continued educational experiences.
