2012 QuarkNet Workshop

July 23-25, 2012

Particle physics is in the new! Stories about the shutdown of the Fermilab’s Tevatron, neutrinos potentially traveling faster than the speed of light, the possible discovery of the Higgs boson, MINOS and NOvA in Minnesota, and numerous articles about CERN have all been reported during this academic year.

We invite you to apply for a workshop that will help address these topics and introduce and develop methods to integrate particle physics topics into your existing curriculum.

QuarkNet participant
QuarkNet participant, Jim Hauge - Physics teacher at Anoka High School enjoys a lecture session.
QuarkNet at the University of Minnesota is offering a five day workshop for high school physics and physical science teachers. Participants will receive:

  • hands-on experiences in particle physics educational activities
  • up to a $600 stipend
  • the potential for a $300 mini-grant to help pay for curriculum supplies
  • current information on particle physics research
  • presentations by particle physicists
  • visits to world class particle physics research laboratories
  • 35 hours of continuing education credits
  • the option of graduate credits at a reduced cost.

The workshop will be conducted in the Tate Lab of Physics on the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota from July 23-25, 2012, and for those new to Quarknet, we will meet for a late afternoon/early evening on May 17th. Additionally, we will take a trip to the Chicago area and the Fermilab on August 12th and 13th.

We hope to see you this summer! If you are interested, please follow the link to the application. Applications are due April 20, 2012 Feel free to print the application, fill it out and mail it in. Copies may also be made for interested colleagues. Questions and mailings can be directed to:
