Located close to downtown Minneapolis, the main campus is just a stone's throw from a recreational and cultural setting that combines the sophistication and vitality of coastal cities like New York and San Francisco with the relaxed amiability of a midwestern city. Downtown St. Paul is a short bus ride away. Together, the Twin Cities are first-class in music and the performing arts, sports and leisure. In symphonic music, the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra are widely recognized. In popular music, the city has become prominent in recent years for original rock, jazz, folk, blues, country and other forms.
In theater, the Twin Cities are home to more than 80 professional or community theater companies, the most notable of which includes the world-famous Tyrone Guthrie Theater, which pioneered the concept of regional repertory theater in the United States. In the visual arts, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Walker Art Center, the University's own Weisman Museum and the Minnesota Museum of Art are continuously vital, along with dozens of privately owned galleries. On campus, the University Film Society is dedicated to screening notable foreign and domestic art films, while other commercial cinemas in the area show leading films of all kinds.
Minnesota is called "The land of 10,000 lakes". Within the Twin Cities metropolitan area are more than 100 lakes for boating, swimming, wind surfing and ice-skating. For backpackers, the nationally known Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northeastern Minnesota is a popular choice for camping in an unspoiled setting.
