Physics Force at the State Fair

Physics Force announces January Shows

The Physics Force will present their annual week of shows for area school children, at Northrop Auditorium on January 11-15, 2016. They will also perform a free public show on Thursday, January 14 at 7 PM. The show lasts about an hour. More »


Rusack elected APS Fellow

Professor Roger Rusack was elected an APS Fellow "for leadership in the development of advanced photodetector systems used in the Higgs boson discovery and realization and exploitation of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment." More »


Zudov named APS Fellow

Professor Michael Zudov was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society "for seminal experiments on nonequilibrium transport in high Landau levels of 2D systems, including discovery of microwave-induced resistance oscillations and zero-resistance states." More »


Gherghetta named APS Fellow

Professor Tony Gherghetta was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society "For contributions to theories of extra dimensions and supersymmetry, advancing our understanding of grand unification, supersymmetry-breaking and the fermion mass hierarchy." More »


Kakalios receives APS Fellowship

Professor James Kakalios was named a APS Fellow "for innovative efforts to engage the public in the excitement of physics through popular science books, general audience talks, and on-line videos that use examples taken from popular culture." More »


Tate Renovation Ground Breaking

University officials broke ground on the renovation of the Tate Science and Teaching building (formerly Tate Laboratory of Physics) at recent ceremony. The occasion marked the official beginning of the two-year renovation scheduled to be completed in Fall of 2017 that will transform the 89 year old building into the joint home of the School of Physics and Astronomy and the Newton Horace Winchell School of Earth Sciences. Adam Riess

Riess to deliver Kaufmanis Lecture

Nobel Laureate Adam Riess will deliver the Kaufmanis Public Lecture on April 21, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in the McNamara Alumni Center. Riess will speak on the topic of "Supernovae Reveal an Accelerating Universe." More »

Physics Force at the Fair

The Physics Force is a group of wild and crazy physicists who use highly visual and entertaining demonstrations to teach elements of physics. The Physics Force goes above and beyond (literally) to educate and entertain. Their blend of slapstick, prop comedy and science is fun and educational for audiences of all ages. Performances are on August 31 at 10:00 and 11:00 at the U of M Stage/ University of Minnesota Central and on September 2 at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at the U of M Stage/University of Minnesota Central. SPS Chapter receives outreach award

The Minnesota chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) received a Marsh W. White Award for physics outreach. The group received $300 to use toward outreach activities. The group used the money to purchase items for their outreach demo box.

Al Knutson

Al Knutson Remembered

Long-time School of Physics and Astronomy staff member, Al Knutson died Tuesday, August 4th in a bike/car accident that occurred while he was commuting to work. Knutson joined the School in December, 1961 and ran the Electronics Shop for most of his career. There will be a memorial bike ride for Al on Saturday, August 15th at 11:00 a.m. departing from Stinson Blvd and 37th Ave. NE. More »
