Speaker: Eric Carter, Macalester College
Subject: The Health of the People: A New History of Latin American Social Medicine

This presentation summarizes a new book project on the history of social medicine in Latin America. Covering the period from approximately the 1920s to the early 2000s, the book analyzes the intellectual history of social medicine, the international networks that sustained the field, and its influence on health policy in the region. This talk will highlight the experiences of Chile, Argentina, and Brazil in particular. I argue that the analytical substance and intellectual depth of Latin American social medicine deserve to be taken seriously, as the success of rights- and equity-based approaches to health policy provide lessons for countries like the US, which still struggles to find a way to design an equitable, effective, and efficient health system that places people above profits.
