Three faculty members in the School are part of a $2.6 million grant over the next three years from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Basic Energy Sciences. The new Center for Quantum Materials brings together an interdisciplinary research team of Professors Andrey Chubakov, Rafael Fernandes and Martin Greven from the School and Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science professors Bharat Jalan and Chris Leighton. Professor Natalia Perkins was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society for "theoretical studies of the low-energy behavior of strongly correlated electron systems that exhibit an interplay of orbital and spin degrees of freedom."
Professor Clement Pryke was named a Fellow of the American Physics Society for "groundbreaking measurement and data analyses of the polarization of cosmic microwave background radiation, and for using the data to provide strong constraints on the composition and initial conditions of the early universe." Professor John Wygant has been named a Fellow of the American Physical Society for "advancing our understanding of energy flows by Alfvén waves and particle acceleration in regions of magnetic reconnection and collisionless shocks and the design and implementation of the space-borne electric field instruments that enabled these studies." John Bowers, (physics '76) and Bradley Peterson (Physics '74) received the University's highest alumni accolade, the Minnesota Board of Regents' Outstanding Achievement Award. More »
Vuk Mandic, a member of the LIGO collaboration and Professor in the School of Physics and Astronomy will deliver the Minnesota Institute for Astrophysics Public Lecture, Observing the Universe with Gravitational Waves. The lecture will take place in the Bell Museum Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on October 13, 2016. More »
John Preskill of the California Institute of Technology will speak on "Quantum Computing and the Entanglement Frontier" at 7:00 p.m.on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 in the Memorial Hall, McNamara Alumni Center for the 11th Annual Irving and Edythe Misel Family Lecture. More »
Physics Force will perform a week of shows for elementary schools at Northrop on the University's campus January 9-13, 2017. Tickets are free but reservations are required. The Physics Force will also perform a free public show on Thursday, January 12 at 7 PM. More »
Professors Jim Kakalios and Evan Skillman will join panel discussions at the Northstar Science Film Festival in St. Paul this week-end. The Physics Force will also perform at the Festival. Events at the Festival are free to students with a University I.D. More »
